Summer Art Camp - Mixed Media
What a week of exploration and discovery of found object artwork! Your children were busy with some amazing work - here are just a few of the things that we covered:
In our daily Art Meetings, your children learned about artists like James Futral, Janet Nolan and Elias Sime - all of which exclusively use found objects and recycled materials to create their work.
We posed the questions what is a found object? What does it mean to make art with found objects? When looking at images of found object art, it can be so fun to spot the different objects that make up the work. Children made the following observations:
"He's using buttons! Lots of buttons!"
"It kinda looks like a daddy long leg that I saw in mama and daddy's home"
"It looks like a half wolf half spider"
"I see a wheel!!"
"There's caps and buttons and wire, you keep looking and you keep seeing new things"
"It looks like he went and got a bunch of trash metal to use"
"It's a pipe cleaner maybe"
"It looks like she created a pattern"
All week children worked on an individual project of creating a self portrait using found objects on a vinyl record. Our camp helper Kyla led a project for the children to create individual color wheels using 2D and 3D found objects.
The children also participated in two collaborative group projects - a wire and plastic cap sculpture the children titled "Rollercoaster" inspired by the work of Janet Nolan and a sculpture made from items children brought in from home. For the latter project, children worked with Erin to glue all of the items together, forming a strange and wonderful structure. Then we transformed the structure into a work of art by spray painting it a dark blue color. Looking at this sculpture is like a game of I spy!
Thanks for a great week with your children!
