Playspace

A lifelong love of learning and creativity starts here

A Reggio-Emilia Inspired Playspace

State of Play follows the Reggio Emilia approach's philosophy, emphasizing open-ended play and learning. Our space is designed much like a Reggio-style classroom, with imaginative, wonder-inspiring opportunities for both children and parents.

Our 3,000 sf indoor playspace is a thoughtfully designed environment for children ages 0-9 and their families, where developmentally appropriate play, art, and discovery converge. Every feature of State of Play is meticulously curated to kindle creativity, curiosity, and growth – from our geometric play fort to the sensory bins and our inspiring art studio to the glow cave.

How to Play

At State of Play, we invite grown-ups to participate actively in their child's journey of learning and discovery. Our playspace is divided into engaging modular stations, each equipped with interactive materials and prompts to guide parents/caregivers in facilitating their child's play.

Whether it's a sensory table filled with sand and small figurines for storytelling or a vibrant art studio equipped with various mediums for expression, each station serves as a unique portal to an imaginative world. And yes, we even have a glow cave — an immersive sensory experience that might inspire a trip to the stars or the center of the earth – never failing to spark wonder.

Written or visual prompts are provided at each station to inspire conversation and extend the depth of play. These dialogues could range from encouraging storytelling to sparking curiosity about textures, smells, or sounds. Even for our littlest visitors, these prompts offer approachable pathways to engage the senses and creative expression.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We do this for a few reasons. 60-90 min feels like a great amount of time for the age group we serve. Toward the end of each play period, we ring a bell and have a group clean up of our space, modeling for children the importance of taking care of the materials they love so much. Then we all gather on the rug for a goodbye circle. This can help immensely with transitions out of the space, because everyone is leaving at the same time versus a staggered exit when friends might be upset to leave before others. We close the space after everyone exits for 15 minutes to allow our staff to reset stations, spray everything down with a non-toxic cleaner and vacuum so that the next group finds a clean and fresh experience to enjoy!

  • You can certainly show up when a play period is beginning; however, you run the risk of our space being filled up during any given play period. We strongly recommend you book your playtime in advance. Don't have access to a computer, smart phone, or internet? No worries – just call us and we'll book your time for you!

  • State of Play is committed to the health and safety of all our families and team members. In addition to a complete facility clean each night, we close our space for 15 minutes between each play periods to vacuum, reset the space as well as wipe down surfaces and spray all playthings with a non-toxic cleaner Force of Nature, which has is EPA approved and proven to fight against covid and other viruses. We do this to provide a safe and clean environment for you and your child to explore

  • What teachers, parents, and kiddos alike love about our offerings is that we frequently change them so they're always fresh – but also that they work within a child's zone of proximal development. That means our materials may be in your child's developmental phase, or they may be slightly beyond, allowing them something to grow into. The beauty of open-ended materials is that a wide age range of children can use the same material in a variety of different ways. Remember, to play and to explore also means to take risks – please be aware there are some choking hazards in our space, especially in and around our sensory bins.

  • Be prepared to have a lot of fun! A few things to consider before or during your time with us: We recommend booking in advance. We are a shoe-free facility so bring grippie socks with you as our frequently steam cleaned floors can be slippery. Open Play requires parent/caregiver accompaniment- so plan on staying with your child during this type of programming as opposed to our other drop off programs. Our space is geared toward ages 0-8 or 9. Children and grown-ups should wear clothes that can get messy especially if visiting our art studio!
